| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Plate Tectonics | The study of how Earth's plates move |
| Tectonic Plates | Pieces of the Earth's crust on either side of the fault |
| Crust | The top layer of the Earth |
| Mantle | Largest layer,under crust |
| Core | 2 parts;Outer Core is liquid and solid iron and nickel; Inner Core is solid iron and nickel |
| Destructive Forces | Forces that tear done or destroy objects/property |
| Constructive Forces | Forces that build something up |
| Fault | Crack in the Earth's crust whose sides show evidence of motion (Destructive and Constructive forces) |
| Divergent Boundaries | Where new crust is generated as the plates pull away from each other |
| Convergent Boundaries | Where crust is destroyed as one plate dives under another (Oceanic and Continental crust Continental and Continental crust- Constructive- fold mountains) |
| Subduction | When one plates moves underneath the other thinner plate |
| Continental Plates | Crust/plates under the continentals (Oceanic plates-Crust/plates under the ocean) |
| Transform Faults Boundaries | Where crust is neither produced nor destroyed as the plates slide horizontally past each other (The SAN ANDREAS FAULT in California is one!!) |
| Mountains | Areas of the continental plates that have been thrust or folded upward by faults pushing plates together, or sliding over another plate |
