TermDefinition
Groundwater water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock
Porosity The amount of pore spaces
Water Table The upper surface of the zone of saturation
Zone of aeration Air in pores above the zone of saturation
Permeability ability of material to let water pass
Aquifers Permeable sediments with large pores - gravel/sand
Aquicludes Barriers to groundwater flow
Springs The natural discharge of groundwater that occurs where aquifer intersects the surface
Hot Springs Always greater that 30 degrees celsius. Near igneous activity and deep aquifers
Geyser Explosive hot spring
Carbonic acid Water and carbon dioxide mix to form this. (Groundwater is slightly acidic due to this)
Calcite Acidic water dissolves this in limestone.
Stalactites Form calcite precipitation
Hard water Has high amounts of Ca, Mg, Fe; can clog pipes
Wells Hole in ground to reach an aquifer
Ordinary well Reaches below water table
Cone of depression Overpumping forms this
Recharge Precipitation must help do this
Artesian Well Drilled into aquifer under pressure Water spurts like a fountain
Threats to Water Supply Overuse: Removal > Recharge (Ogallala Aquifer, U.S.) Pollution: sewage, landfills, etc. Chemicals Salt (coastal areas) Radon (from natural decay of U)
