behavior | anything an animal does in response to a stimulus in its environment. |
habituation | learned behavior that occurs when an animal is repeatedly given a stimulus not associated with an punishment or reward. |
courtship | an instinctive behavior that males and females of a species carry out before mating. |
innate behavior | an inherited behavior in animals; includes automatic responses and instinctive behaviors. |
imprinting | learned behavior in which an animal, at a specific critical time of its life, forms a social attachment to another object; usually occurs early in life and allows an animal to recognize its mother and another of its species. |
communication | exchange of information that results in a change of behavior. |
predation | is a mechanism of population control. |
stimulus | anything in an organism's internal or external environment that causes the organism to react. |
insight | type of learning in which an animal uses previous experiments to respond to a new situation. |
response | an organism's reaction to a change in its internal or external environment. |
migration | instinctive seasonal movements of animals from place to place. |
classical conditioning | learning by association. |
trial and error | type of learning in which an animal receives a reward for making a particular response. |
pheromones | chemical signals given off by animals the signal animals to engage in specific behaviors. |
mutualism | a symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit. |
parasitism | symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits at the expense of another, usually another species. |
territorial defense | physical space an animal defends against other members of its species; it may contain breeding area, feeding area, potential mates or all three. |
learned behavior | the ability to learn is inherited, but the behavior develops during an animals life time. |
competition | is an interaction between organisms or species, in which the fitness of one is lowered by the presence of another. |
chemotaxis | is the movement of an organism in response to chemical stimulus. |
phototaxis | is the movement of an organism toward or away from a source of light. |
