Chapter 3
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Protons | positive charge |
| Neutrons | no charge |
| Electrons | negative charge |
| Atoms | basic unit of measure (protons, electrons and neutrons) |
| Molecules | two or more atoms joined by covalent bonds |
| Compounds | substances made up of two or more elements (H2O) |
| Organic Compounds | Carbon to carbon bonds living organisms need them to live |
| Inorganic Compounds | lacks carbon to carbon bond, makes up non living things (salt) |
| Hydrocarbons | hydrogen bonded to carbon, heating |
| Proteins | supports chemical production |
| Carbohydrates | Energy is not available without them |
| Lipids | Stores energy |
| Nucleic Acids (sugars) | Makes protein, cells communicate so your body can react |
| POW:Polarity | Unequal charges |
| POW: Hydrogen bonds | opposites attract |
| Adhesion | water is attracted to other substances |
| Cohesion | Water is attracted to water |
| States of Matter | Solid: Ice Liquid: Water Gas: steam or fog |
| POW: Water is less dense as a solid | Ice floats because it is less dense than liquid water |
| POW: High Specific Heat | It releases heat energy slowly and help living organisms regulate their body temperatures |
| POW: Universal Solvent | Water dissolves almost any substance (except lipids) |
| Capillary action | Water can travel upward because it is Adhesive |
| Are ice molecule tightly packed together or spread apart | spread apart |
| pH Scale | tells whether substance is acidic, basic or neutral |
| Acid | 0-6.9 |
| Base | 7.1-14 |
| Neutral | 7 (ONLY WATER) |
