N112 - Direct Action Vasodilators for mid term

Arteriolar dilators used in hypertensive emergency
Arteriolar & venous dilators used alone or in combination with other drugs for HTN
Direct action vasodilators action DIRECT action on vascular smooth muscle, causes arteriolar vasodilation & decreased peripheral resistance
Drop in BP stimulates SNS and activates the baroreceptor reflexes, increasing HR & CO
Reflex tachycardia need to add beta blocker
Na+ & fluid retention need to add diuretic
Other side effects Hypotension & hyperglycemia
Assess for tachycardia & fluid retention
