Lesson 3 plant

How do their parts help plants surviive

QuestionAnswer
What type of roots might be found on a large tree that needs a lot of support? buttress roots
Why do you think some orchids grow high up on the trunks of trees? Plants grow on the trunks of trees in order to reach sunlight. An orchid probably grows this way because it needs sunlight that it couldn't get on the ground.
What is the air like around plants that grow on tree trunks? The air has a lot of water in it.
How can wind and water help seeds travel away from their parent plant? Wind and water can carry seeds to areas where they can grow.
What may have prevented a seed from producing a healthy new plant? The seed may have grown too close to its parent. The parent took all of the water, sunlight, and nutrients in the area.
How are plants able to live in many different environments? Special parts, such as roots, leaves, and seeds, help plants survive in different environments.
If you see a plant that has thick, waxy, skin and a stem that stores water. What kind of environment might this plant live in? The plant might live in a dry environment.
What advice could you give a friend if they say they cannot grow a garden because his area is too dry. The person could grow plants that have parts that help them survive in dry environments, such as bromeliad or cactus.
What can you infer about how a seed with a parachute-shaped structure moves away from its parent plant? The seed uses wind to move from its parent plant.
How does a prop roots help a plant? It helps the plant stand upright on wet soil.
What are the four major ways seeds spread? wind, water, hook onto animal fur, animals eating fruit
Imagine that you could change the parts of a cactus so that it could live in a wet, forest environment. What changes would you make to its roots, stems and leaves? The cactus leaves should change from spines to broad leaves that can collect sunlight in a shady area. The stem could change to a tall, fast growing stem that can carry the leaves to the sunlight. The cactus would need strong, deep roots, such as buttress roots, to hold it up in the soft damp soil.
Leaves need to collect enough sunlight to make food. Suppose you see two plants. One has large, broad leaves. The other small, narrow leaves. What can you infer about the amount of sunlight in the environment in which each plant lives? The leaf that has large, broad leaves probably lives somewhere shady, and it uses its broad leaves to collect enough sunlight. The plant with narrow leaves probably lives where there is a lot of sunlight, so it does not need very broad leaves.
Plants that grow on the trunks of trees have parts that get what from the air? water
