Needs of Plants

LEsson 1 Plants Meet their Needs?

QuestionAnswer
What are some things plants need? sunlight, water, air, and nutrients
What is the function of the root? Roots take in water and nutrients and provide support for the plant.
What is the function of the stem? Stems contain small tubes that carry water and nutrients from the roots to other parts of the plant. The stem also holds up the leaves.
What is the function of the leaves? Leaves make food by taking in sunlight and air , and using them to produce sugar.
What are the two main groups of living things? Animals and Plants
What things from the environment does the sunflower use to grow? They use sunlight, air, water, and nutrients from the soil.
How are plants different from animals? Plants cannot move from place to place. Also, plants usually have leaves.
What do plants and animals both need to survive? Plants and animals both need air, water, and food to survive.
What would happen if the plant had no roots? The plant would not be able to get water or nutrients from the soil, and it would probably not survive.
What feature does the plant cells have that help the plant stay up and give it shape? The plant cells have stiff walls.
What is the function of the tiny hair-like parts found on the root? The tiny hair-like parts help roots soak up water and nutrients from the soil.
A tree trunk is what part of the tree? the stem
What part of the plant is the spines of a cactus and the needles of a pine tree? the leaves
How might large, wide leaves help a plant survive in a crowded forest where there are bigger plants and trees? Plants need sunlight to make food. If a plant is growing in a crowded forest, it might be difficult for the plant to get the sunlight it needs. Large, wide leaves could help it capture more available sunlight.
When some potted plants are grown indoors, their leaves actually turn to face the windows. Why does having leaves face the windows help the plant survive? Plants need sunlight to make food. Sunlight comes into a room through its windows. Leaves that face the windows can capture more sunlight.
Through what part do gases from the air enter a plant? The leaves
Suppose a plant has plenty of light, soil, and air. Its leaves are turning brown and dry. Which of its needs is not being met? The plant is lacking water.
Describe how stems and leaves of a plant work to help the plant live. Stems bring water and nutrients to make leaves, which use them to make food.
If you cut off the roots of a plant, which of the plants needs would no longer be met? The plant could no longer absorb water and nutrients from the soil.
