Chapter 7.2 Vocabulary Words

QuestionAnswer
Bacteria Are prokaryotes, the genetic material in their cells are not contained in a nucleus.
Flagellum A long, whiplike structure that helps a cell to move.
Binary Fission When one cell divides to form two identical cells.
Asexual Reproduction A reproductive system that involves only one parent and produces offspring that are identical to the parent.
Sexual Reproduction When two parents combine their genetic material to produce a new organism, which differ from both parents.
Conjugation Wen one bacterium transfers some genetic material to another bacterium through a threadlike bridge.
Endospore A small, rounded, thick-walled, resting cells that forms inside a bacterial cell.
Pasteurization Is when the food is heated to a temp. that is high enough to kill most harmful bacteria without changing the taste of the food.
Decomposers Organisms that break down large chemicals in dead organisms into small chemicals.
