GenBio cells ch 2

cell structure and function for beginners

TermDefinition
Cell membrane protective phospholipid bilayer- controls what enters and exits the cell
semipermeable membrane a membrane that only allows some things to enter or exit.
cytoplasm the liquid interior of the cell
organelles the parts that make up the cell
cell wall tough outer protective layer in plants and some bacteria but NOT in animals
nucleus the control center of the cell. DNA is housed here
chloroplasts take sunlight and transform it into food. these are found in plant cells
mitochondria the powerhouse of the cell. These break down food to make energy for plants and animals by cellular respiration
ribosomes synthesize proteins
proteins do the work for the cell
rough endoplasmic reticulum synthesizes lipids and proteins and sends them to the golgi
golgi modifies lipids and proteins and ships them out of the cell
lysosome clean up the cell- gets rid of old or dead organelles
tissue many cells working together
cell the smallest unit of life
organ many tissues working together
organ system many organs working together
organism an individual living thing
prokaryote cells without a nucleus and without membrane bound organelles
eukaryote cells with a nucleus that contain membrane bound organelles
examples of prokaryotes bacteria
examples of eukaryotes plants, animals, fungus and protists

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
