| Term | Definition |

| Volcano | place where gas, ash or melted rock come out of the ground. |
| magma | melted rock, that is less dense than solid rock, so rises toward the surface |
| Dormant | an eruption hasn't occurred in a long time |
| Lava | magma that has reached Earth's surface |
| Vent | lava and ash clouds that erupt from an opening of a volcano |
| Viscosity | resistance of a liquid material such as lava, to to flow, can be low or high |
| pyroclastic material | hot ash and bits of rock ejected into the atmosphere |
| shield volcano | broad base, gentle sloping sides, ex)Hawaiian Islands |
| Cinder Cone | cinders and ash build up around the vent and form a steep volcano, can form at a side vent on another volcanic mt. |
| Composite volcano | alternating layers of hardened lava flows and pyroclastic material erupts. Develop into large steep volcanic mountains |
| Fissures | lava flows from giant cracks in Earth's surface |
| Lava plateau | result from a thick and mostly flattened layer of cooled lava |
| Craters | opening or depression at top of volcano caused by eruptions |
| Calderas | form from sudden drain of magma chamber during an explosive eruption or slowly emptied magma chamber |
| tectonic plates | giant sections of lithosphere on Earth's surface |
| hot spot | location where a column of extremely hot mantle rock rises through the asthenosphere |
