Earthqaukes

TermDefinition
Earthqaukes Vibrations in the earth caused by a sudden burst of energy from the crust
crust The earth's outer layer
fault A fracture in the earth's crust
mantle The second layer of earth
lithosphere a crust on the earth that rises and makes hills
lithosphere plates Plates that can shift and cause a big diruption
siesmotologist A scientist that studies earthqaukes
s wave a straight wave during an earthquake
p wave a snake wave
surface wave An earthquake on the surface
Focus the energy of a earthquake
epicenter the main cause of an earthqauke
seismic waves Aftershock of earthqauke
Magnitude a version of measuring of how strong an earthquake is
Tsunami A big wave caused by earthquake underwater
liquidification when water mixes and turns into mud
aftershock A small eartyqauke
Base isolators Pads to separate foundation to the ground to reduce shaking
shear core walls They transfer energy to the walls to reduce damage
cross bracing It helps with skyscrapers stand up straight
Mass damper A ball in the middle of a building to reduce damage from seismic waves.
flexible pipe It bends during an earthquake thus reducing damage to flooding
tension ties A device that holds the wall to the floor.
Stress tension held by rocks on each other until they snap
Tension A type fault for earthqaukes
compression A type of fault letting out a burst of energy
strike-slip fualt Faults moving verticly
Normal fault A normal way of walls moving
reverse fault faults moving horisontilly
anticline the way earth quakes move up
synicline The way earth quakes move down
plateau A flat surface above sea level
hanging wall One side of fault
foot wall another side of fault
shearing A wall of rock moving together
Crust The outer layer of earth
pressure the pushing of the surface
mantle the second layer of earth
Mercalli scale a scale used for studying the depth of earthqaukes
`Richter scale A scale used for measuring the magnitude of an earthquake
inner core the inside of earth known as core
outer core the outside of the earths core
asthenosphere A weak form of crust under lithosphere
continental crust A crust that is found underneath land on earth
oceanic crust Crust found underneath ocean on earth
Divergent boundary A feature of two tectonic plates moving away from eachother
convergent boundary Two plates colliding into each other going down
transform boundary Plates that moves up that can cause hill to form

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
