Organelle Functions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Membrane/ Plasma Membrane | Controls the movement into and out of the cell HINT: GATEKEEPER |
| Cytoplasm | Watery material inside cell membrane which contains many of the materials involved in cells metabolism HINT: JELLO |
| Nucleus | Serves as the control center for the cell metabolism and reproduction HINT: CONTROL CENTER |
| Ribosomes | Sites of protein synthesis. Those attached to the ER produce proteins for "export". "Free" ribosomes produce proteins for use inside the cell. HINT: RIBS HAVE PROTEINS. PROTEIN FACTORIES. |
| Lysosomes | Involved in the digestion of food within the cell Release enzymes into vacuoles to digest food. If the cell is damaged or worn out, enzymes are released that will digest the cell and recycle chemicals. HINT: SUICIDE SACS |
| Mitochondria | The powerhouse of the cell. Provides 95% of the cells energy. Site of cellular respiration. HINT: THE MIGHTY MIGHTY_____ |
| Golgi Bodies | Processes and packages proteins from the ER for secretion(release) to the outside of the cell. HINT: POST OFFICE |
| Vacuole/Vessicle | storage of water, enclosed space for digestion of food, contains waste to be eliminated. HINT: VACCUUM |
| Nucleolus | Site of the production of ribosomes. Makes rRNA and combines it with proteins to later form ribosomes. HINT: IN NUCLEOUS |
| Nuclear Membrane | Controls movement into and out of the nucleus. |
| Cell Wall | Gives the cell its shape and provides protection; not found in animal cells HINT: IT PROTECTS THE CELL |
| Cilia | hair-like structures with the capacity for movement HINT: EYELASHES |
| Flagellum | a long, hair-like structure used for movement HINT: A TAIL |
| Chloroplast | Site for photosynthesis |
| DNA/Chromatin | Thread- like bodies that carry genetic information |
| Peroxisome | To detoxify harmful substances that enter the cell. Most common in liver and kidney cells |
| Centrosome | Coordinates the building and breaking of microtubules in the cell |
| Centrioles | Seperate and form spindle during mitosis HINT: USED WITH MITOSiS |
| Cytoskeleton | a microscopic network of protein filaments and tubules in the cytoplasm of many living cells, giving them shape and coherence. |
| Nuclear Envelope | Seperate the nucleoplasm from the cytoplasm HINT: PROTECTS NUCLEUS |
| Chromatin | Active, uncoiled form of DNA carrying out the functions of the cell HINT: FORM OF DNA |
| Prokaryotes | Small,no nucleus, cell wall, Ex: Bacteria |
| Eukaryotes | Little bit larger, nucleus, no cell wall Ex: Plants and animals |
