Archaea Types of cells that utlize deoriboneucleic acid (DNA) as their genetic material but do not have their DNA encased with a nuclear envelope.
Atoms The basic building blocks of matter.
Bacteria single-celled or noncellular spherical or spiral or rod shaped organisms lacking chlorophyll that reproduce by fission
Cells Basic living units of all organisms
Characteristic a feature or quality belonging typically to a person, place, or thing and serving to identify it
Convergent evolution the process by which unrelated species become more similar as tehy adapt to the same kind of environment
Divergent evolution when two or more species sharing a common ancestor become more different over time
Domain a taxonomic category above the kingdom level. The three are Archaea, Bacteria, and Eurkayra
Eukarya Domain of all organisms whose cells have nuclei, include the protists, plants, fungi, and animals.
Evolution A change in species over time
Homeostasis Process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment
innate behaviors Behavior that appears as an animal develops, apparently without having been learned. Complete without practice.
Kingdom first and largest category used to classify organsims
Linnean Taxonomy A system of classification that divides all living things into hierarchical groups based on their characteristics.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Molecules Chemical that result from atoms linking together
natural selection Charles Darwins' theory that the features of an organism that help it survive and reproduce are more likely than other features to be passed on to the next generation.
Phylum the major taxonomic group of plants and animals
Protista kingdom composted of eukaryotes that are not classified as plants, animals, or fungi.
