| Cause and Effect | To focus on the process in which one event brings about another. |
| Note Taking | Remembering the key facts and details from a reading. |
| Outlining | Helps you organize information into topics and subtopics. |
| Paraphrasing | Using your own words to tell what you've read,heard, or seen. Helpful strategy for visuals. |
| Questioning the Author | Asking questions as you read such as why the author wrote this. |
| Reading Critically | Finding and evaluating the author's main idea in a piece of writing. |
| Skimming | To glance quickly through a selection. |
| Summarizing | Retelling the main ideas or events in your own words. |
| Synthesizing | You look at a number of different elements of a text and decide how they affect the selection or subject as a whole. |
| Graphic Organizer | Charts, graphs webs, diagrams, or any other visual to help you understand a selection. |
| Visulizing | Making a mental picture or sketch of the words on a page and talking through your ideas about what you're reading. |
