Language Arts

Close Reading Reading word for word,sentence by sentence, or line by line.

Outlining Helps you organize information into topics and subtopics.
Paraphrasing Using your own words to tell what you've read,heard, or seen. Helpful strategy for visuals.
Questioning the Author Asking questions as you read such as why the author wrote this.
Reading Critically Finding and evaluating the author's main idea in a piece of writing.
Skimming To glance quickly through a selection.
Summarizing Retelling the main ideas or events in your own words.
Synthesizing You look at a number of different elements of a text and decide how they affect the selection or subject as a whole.
Graphic Organizer Charts, graphs webs, diagrams, or any other visual to help you understand a selection.
Visulizing Making a mental picture or sketch of the words on a page and talking through your ideas about what you're reading.
