QuestionAnswer
what hormones can be used to to artificially change how fertile a woman is? FSH, LH, oestrogen and progesterone
what is oestrogen used for? to prevent the release of an egg (if it is taken everyday to keep the level of it permanently high, it inhibits the production of FSH and after a while egg development and production stop) so can be used as a method of contraception
what does progesterone do? reduces fertility by stimulating the production of thick cervical mucus which prevents sperm getting through to reach the egg
what are the pros of the contraceptive pill? 1. over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy 2. reduces the risk of getting some types of cancer
what are the cons of the contraceptive pill? 1. there is still a slight chance of getting pregnant 2. can cause side effects e.g. headaches, nausea, irregular menstrual bleeding etc...
what are the pros of having FSH and LH injected into women to stimulate egg release? 1. it helps women get pregnant when they couldn't before
what are the cons of having FSH and LH injected into women to stimulate egg release? 1. it doesn't always work 2. too many eggs could be stimulated resulting in unexpected multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets)
what does IVF stand for? in vitro fertilisation
what is IVF? (after FSH and LH have been given to stimulate egg production) collecting eggs from the woman's ovaries and fertilising them in a lab using the man's sperm. these are then grown into embryos. once the embryos are tiny balls of cells one or 2 of them are transferred into the woman's uterus to improve chance of preg
what are the pros of IVF? can give an infertile couple a child
what are the cons of IVF? 1. some women have strong reactions e.g. abdonminal pain, vomiting, dehydration 2. multiple births can happen if more than one embryo grows into a baby-risks of miscarriage, still birth, low birth weight
