Definitions

TermDefinition
Polaris The current star to which the North Celestial Pole of Earth points; also called the "North Star."
Latitude An angular distance on a globe that runs parallel (east and west) to the equator; measured in degrees north and south .
Longitude An angular distance distance on a globe that runs perpendicular (north and south) to the equator; measured in degrees east and west.
Ellipse An oval-shaped closed curve; the shape of a planet's orbit.
Summer Solstice Either of two times of the year during which the north pole is most directed to the Sun.
Winter Solstice Either of two times of the year during which the north pole is most away from the Sun.
Equinox Either of two times of the year (fall or spring) during a planet's orbit when the north and south poles are equidistant from the Sun, causing day and night to be in equal in length.
