Lesson 5 vocabulary

TermDefinition
Protein One of 3 basic food types. It is needed for building and repairing tissues in the body. All enzymes are proteins.
Gastric Juice A liquid that includes HCL and pepsin. It is responsible for the chemical digestion of protein in the stomach.
Pepsin An enzyme in the stomach that breaks down protein.
Rennin A special enzyme that begins the digestion of milk.
Chyme A pulpy mixture of food and gastric juices that is produced in the stomach, from which it passes into the small intestine.
Ulcer An open sore or lesion in the skin or mucous membrane.
Heartburn A painful sensation in the lower esophagus or upper stomach; sometimes caused by excess stomach acids.
