| Term | Definition |

| Protein | One of 3 basic food types. It is needed for building and repairing tissues in the body. All enzymes are proteins. |
| Gastric Juice | A liquid that includes HCL and pepsin. It is responsible for the chemical digestion of protein in the stomach. |
| Pepsin | An enzyme in the stomach that breaks down protein. |
| Rennin | A special enzyme that begins the digestion of milk. |
| Chyme | A pulpy mixture of food and gastric juices that is produced in the stomach, from which it passes into the small intestine. |
| Ulcer | An open sore or lesion in the skin or mucous membrane. |
| Heartburn | A painful sensation in the lower esophagus or upper stomach; sometimes caused by excess stomach acids. |
