Seasons on Earth

TermDefinition
Polaris The current star to which the North celestial Pole of the Earth points; also called the North Star.
Latitude angular distance on a globe that runs parallel( east to west) to the equator' measured in degrees north and south.
Longitude angular distance on a globe that runs perpendicular( north to south) to equator; measured in degrees east to west
Ellipse an oval-shaped closed curve; the shape of a planet's orbit
Summer Solstice when the sun shines directly over the tropic of cancer. June 21/22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Longer days... Axis facing towards the sun
Winter Solstice when the Sun shines directly over the tropic of Capricorn. December 21/22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Shorter Days... Axis facing away from the Sun.
Equinox Either of two times of the year( fall or spring) during a planet's orbit when the south and north poles are equidistant from the Sun, causing day and night to be equal in length.
