Seasons on Earth
| Term | Definition |

| Polaris | The current star to which the North celestial Pole of the Earth points; also called the North Star. |
| Latitude | angular distance on a globe that runs parallel( east to west) to the equator' measured in degrees north and south. |
| Longitude | angular distance on a globe that runs perpendicular( north to south) to equator; measured in degrees east to west |
| Ellipse | an oval-shaped closed curve; the shape of a planet's orbit |
| Summer Solstice | when the sun shines directly over the tropic of cancer. June 21/22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Longer days... Axis facing towards the sun |
| Winter Solstice | when the Sun shines directly over the tropic of Capricorn. December 21/22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Shorter Days... Axis facing away from the Sun. |
| Equinox | Either of two times of the year( fall or spring) during a planet's orbit when the south and north poles are equidistant from the Sun, causing day and night to be equal in length. |
