Weaver Unit 5 Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Asthenosphere plasticlike layer of Earth on which the plates float and move around. It consists of weak rock that can move slowly.
Lithosphere rigid layer of Earth about 100 kilometers thick, made of the crust and the upper part of the mantle
Crust the outermost layer of the Earth. The thickness varies between 5 - 60 kilometers. It is less dense than the layer underneath.
Upper Mantle a more fluid section of the mantle where seismic waves slow down.
Lower Mantle a more solid portion of the mantle where seismic waves speed up.
Outer Core a liquid section of the Earth, made mainly of iron
Inner Core the solid center of the Earth made mostly of iron, with smaller amounts of nickel, oxygen, silicon and sulphur.
Mantle Earth's largest layer, lying above the outer core. It is It is divided into two parts based on how seismic waves move through the areas.
