BIOLOGY

QuestionAnswer
endocytosis substances engulf cells, process of taking things into the cel
exocytosis cell getting rid of substances
phagocytosis cell eating (solids)
hypertonic high concentration of solute
hypotonic low concentration of solute
isotonic equal concentration of solute and both sides
lysosome releases enzymes
chloroplast where photosynthesis takes place and gives it green color
cytoplasm holds insides of cell (organelles)
cytoskeleton gives cells structures
active transport moving molecules using energy
passive transport movement of substances without energy
osmosis diffusion of water
diffusion substances moving from a high concentration to a low concentration
organelles carries out special jobs in a cell
cell theory 3 main points, last is that all cells come from existing cells
phospholipid make up the 2 layers of the cell membrane
fluid mosaic model describes cell membrane structure because it is flexible and could be compared to an arrangement of tiles
eukaryotic cell has a nucleus and are plants and animal cells
prokaryotic cell does not have a nucleus and is bacteris
facilitated diffusion help molecules diffuse across a membrane through transport proteins
endoplasmic reticulum 2 types, rough and smooth, and helps produce proteins and lipids
lysosome contains enzymes and defends cells from viruses and bacteria, animal cells have lots of them
mitochondrion organelle shaped like a bean and provides energy for the cell
centriole cylinder-shaped organelle in animal cells, and helps make flagella
cell membrane outer edge that separates a cell from the outside environment and controls what goes in and out of the cell
receptor receives signals from molecules and makes sure the right cell gets the right signal at the right time
vacuole sac filled with fluid inside a cell that stores materials and the cell needs
vesicles little organelle that carries materials from one part of the cell to another, does not live long, but can be recycled
cell theory theory that states that all organisms are made of cells, al cells are produced by other living cells, and the cell is the most basic unit of life
nucleus organelle composed of a double membrane that acts as the storehouse for most of a cell's DNA
organelle that links amino acids together to form proteins
golgi apparatus stack of flat, membrane-enclose spaces containing enzymes that process, sort, and deliver proteins
cell wall rigid structure that gives protection, support, and shape to cells in plants, algae, fungi, and bacteria
concentration gradient difference in the concentration of a substance from one location to another
selective permeability condition or quality of allowing some, but not all, materials to cross a barrier or membrane

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
