The Water Cycle

TermDefinition
Evaporation When warm water rises, and becomes a vapor.
Condensation When water vapor turns into droplets, and forms around dust particles to make clouds.
Precipitation When water droplets become so big and heavy that they fall from the clouds, down to the ground. *Rain, sleet, hail, and snow.
The water cycle The system in which water is continuously recycled naturally.
Temperature The degree of heat or cold an object has.
Run-off The rain water that flows from land to a body of water.
Ground water Water that has soaked into the ground and can last from days to millions of years.
High pressure When the pressure of the air is high. Weather includes rain and storms. Represented by an "H" on a weather map.
Low pressure When the pressure of the air is low. Weather includes sunny, calm, and clear weather. Represented by an "L" on a weather map.
El Nino An abnormal change in wind patterns and climate that happens about every 2-7 years.
Gulf stream The largest, most powerful surface current in North America that is caused by strong winds in the west.
Coriolis Effect The effect the Earth's rotation on the direction of winds and currents.
Upwelling The movement of cold water upward from the deep ocean.
Salinity The amount of salt in a body of water.
Recycle The evaporation of water (1) into the atmosphere, the condensation of water in the atmosphere (2), and the precipitation of water down to Earth (3).
Water vapor Water in the state of a gas.
Current A long stream of moving water or air.
