Moon Vocabulary

Phases of the Moon

TermDefinition
AXIS An imaginary line that an object spins or revolves around.
rotation Turning around on an axis spinning
illuminate To brighten with light
new moon The beginning phase of the moon cycle. The Earth,moon, and sun are all lin aligmnment and the moon appears completely dark.
first quarter The moon phase occurring after new mooon and before full moon, when half of the illuminated surface is visible from the Earth.
full moon The moon phase that occurs when the Earth is between the moon and t he sun. The moon will appear at its brightest. the entire disc of the moon will be illuminated.
third quarter The moon phase occurring after full moon and before new moon, when half of the illuminated surface is visible from Earth. Also known as the last quarter.
orbit The curved path of the object as it revolves around another object to move or travel around in a curved path.
revolve To move around another object along a curved path.
lunar Having to do with the moon or moon cycles.
moon phase The apparent shape of the illuminated part of the moon that can be seen from Earth.
waning To have a gradually smaller part of its visible surface illuminated, so that it appears to increase in size.
waxing To have a gradually larger part of its visible surface illuminated so that it appears to increase in size.
moon A body in outer space that orbits a planet a natural satellite.
gibbous Having the observable illuminated part of the moon greater than a semicircle, but less than a full circle.
crescent The curved shape of the moon.
