Newton's First Law

Day One of Force And Motion

Newton's First Law of Motion Newton's First Law of Motion-An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalancing force
Inertia Inertia -The tendency for objects to resist changes in movement
Force Force -a push or pull on an object, resulting from its interaction with another object
Direct Contact Forces Direct Contact Forces-forces that act when two interacting objects are in physical contact with each other.
Frictional Forces Frictional Forces –the opposing force exerted by a surface as an object moves across it or makes an effort to move across it . The amount of friction depends on the nature of the two surfaces and on the degree to which they are pressed together.
Tensional Forces Tensional Forces- Tension is a force applied by an object that stretches another object. d. Tensional force is a force applied by an object being stretched.
Normal Forces Normal Forces - the support force exerted upon an object in contact with another stable object in the opposite direction of gravity.
Air resistance force Air resistance force- Direct Contact Force That acts upon objects falling from the sky that increases with surface area. ( Pencil & Paper , skydivers)
Applied Force Applied Force- a force applied to an object by a person or another object.
Action-At-a Distance Forces Action-At-a Distance Forces -forces that act when two interacting objects are not in physical contact with each other.
Gravitational Forces Gravitational Forces -The At-a-Distance force that pulls all objects back to the ground with an equal force of 9.81 newtons.
Electrical Force Electrical Forces - the At-a-distance force of attraction between positive protons and negative electrons in atoms. They do not touch, but are nonetheless pulled toward each othe
Magnetic Forces Magnetic Forces – The At-a-distance force that two magnets exert on each other when separated.
Vector When forces are stated in terms of having both a magnitude(Size) and a direction
Vector Diagram Diagram of the all of the forces acting on an object
Balanced Force Force that cannot change an object speed or direction When the sum of forces acting on an object cancel out and equal zero.
Unbalanced forces Forces that can move an object because the sum of forces acting on this object do not cancel out and equal zero.
Speed the rate at which an object moves that is equal to distance divided by time. (Speed = Distance / Time).
