rock-forming mineralas the 20 minerals that make upmost of the rocks in the Earth's crust
granite light-colored rock that is high in silica content
basalt dark-colored rock that is low in silica
grains the particles of minerals or other racks that give rocks their texture
texture look & feel of a rock's surface
igneous rock rocks that form from the cooling of magma or lava
sedimentary rock rocks that form when particles of other rocks or the remains of plants & animals pressed and cemented together.
metamorphic rock rocks that form when an existing rock is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions.
extrusive rock igneous rocks that form from lava on the surface of the Earth.
intrusive rock igneous rocks that form when magma hardens below the Earth's surface
silica a material made of silicon and oxygen that makes up
sediment small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things
erosion particles carried away from their source by water or wind
deposition process by which sediment settles out of the water or wind carrying it.
compaction the process that presses sediments together
cementation process in which dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles of sediments together
clastic rock a sedimentary rock formed when rock fragments are squeezed together
organic rock a sedimentary rock formed where the remains of plants and animals are deposited in thick layers
chemical rock a sedimentary rock formed when minerals dissolve in a solution and crystallize.
foliated metamorphic rocks that hav their grains arranged in parallel layers or bands
rock cycle a series of processes on the Earth's surface and in the crust and mantle that slowly change rocks from one kind to another.
