Science Review Unit2

-levels of organization-eukaryote vs. prokaryote-plant vs. animal cells-viruses

QuestionAnswer
subcellular order smallest to largest atom-element-molecule-macromolecule-organelles
organism order smallest to largest cell-tissue-organ-organ system-orgnism
ecological order smallest to largest population-community-ecosystem-biome-biosphere
What are the seven properties of life? 1.cell org. 2.reproduction 3.heredity 4.growth and development 5.metablolism 6.responsiveness 7.homeostasis
If you found something with almost most of the seven properties of life but not all, is it alive? No because all living things need to have EVERY one of the seven properties.
Describe metabolism Metabolism is the chemical process tht occurs whithin a living organism in order to maintain life (sum of all chemical reactions)
what are the two main types of reactions? catabolism, anabolism
Describe homeostasis a process where an organism maintains a stable envirnonment
give three examples of homeostasis 1.body temperature 2.ph 3.water content
What is an organism with one cell called? Unicellular
What is an organism with more than one cell called? Multicellular
What is reproduction? Production of offspring
What are the two types of reproduction Asexual and sexual
What are two types of cells? Eukaryote and Prokaryote
What are the simularities that all cells have in common 1.cell membrane 2.ribosomes 3.cytoplasm 4.DNA 5.cytoskeleton 6.proteins 7.cells
What makes a prokaryote different from a eukaryote? name 5 1.Eukaryote has a nucleus 2.prokaryote is unicellular 3.prokaryote are smaller 4.Prokaryote is sexual, eukaryote is asexual 5.Prokaryote is both anaerobic and arobic
Plant vs Animal cells: plant cell differences 1.has a cell wall 2.has chloroplast
Plant vs Animal cells: similarities 1.has a cell membrane 2.has a nucleus 3.has cytoplasm
Plant vs Animal cells: animal cell differences 1.has no cell wall 2.has no chloroplast
What is the difference between a heterotroph and autotroph? A heterotroph gains energy from eating food, while an autotroph gains energy from the sun.
What two things happen when magnifcation increases? 1.The image is more detailed 2.The image becomes larger
What knob should be used at high power? And why? Fine adjustment knob, because you dont want the lens to hit the stage
How do you determine total magnification? Write the formula. eyepiece multiplied by the objective lens = total magnification
What is the highest magnification used in class? 400
Why do you start off at the lowest magnification? To see the whole image, field of view
Describe how the letter e appears through the field of view Upside down and backwards, because its reflected through the light
Are viruses alive? No
Why are viruses not alive? they lack the seven properties
Identify the feature of life that is illustrated by each of the following statements:"That boy shot up five inches in only one year." growth
Identify the feature of life that is illustrated by each of the following statements:"Our cat had a litter of kittens yesterday." reproduction
Identify the feature of life that is illustrated by each of the following statements:"My dog has become much less clumsy now that he is a year old." development
Identify the feature of life that is illustrated by each of the following statements:"Eat a good breakfast and you will be able to run longer." metabolism
Identify the feature of life that is illustrated by each of the following statements:"When that car pulled in the driveway, my cat ran to hide under the porch." Responsiveness
Identify the feature of life that is illustrated by each of the following statements:"That owls night vision allows it to see movement of mice on even the darkest night." Responsiveness
Identify the feature of life that is illustrated by each of the following statements:"Single-celled organisms live in the pond behind school." cell org.
Identify the feature of life that is illustrated by each of the following statements:"Your body normally maintains a temperature of 98.6*F homeostasis
