Microbiology Chapter 9: Biotechnology and DNA Technology

TermDefinition
restriction enzymes DNA-cutting enzymes that can form blunt or sticky ends.
vector A general term for a self-replicating DNA molecule that can be used as a carrier to move a gene from one organism to another.
DNA ligase An enzyme that links short pieces of DNA into longer pieces. It is used when creating recombinant DNA molecules and also when joining Okazaki fragments during DNA replication.
DNA polymerase An enzyme that links nucleotides together to form a complementary strand of DNA during DNA replication.
plasmid The most common cloning vector used in genetic engineering.
recombinant DNA DNA that is made from an mRNA template.
