| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| restriction enzymes | DNA-cutting enzymes that can form blunt or sticky ends. |
| vector | A general term for a self-replicating DNA molecule that can be used as a carrier to move a gene from one organism to another. |
| DNA ligase | An enzyme that links short pieces of DNA into longer pieces. It is used when creating recombinant DNA molecules and also when joining Okazaki fragments during DNA replication. |
| DNA polymerase | An enzyme that links nucleotides together to form a complementary strand of DNA during DNA replication. |
| plasmid | The most common cloning vector used in genetic engineering. |
| recombinant DNA | DNA that is made from an mRNA template. |
