Cell Organelles

Organelles and Functions

TermDefinition
Cell Membrane the selectively permeable membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell
Chromosome the cells genetic information found in the nucleus in the form of genes
Cytoplasm substance that fills living cells; area where almost all metabolic reactions take place
Golgi Body a series of vesicles and folded membranes within the cytoplasm of cells, involved in moving and transporting things in the cell.
Lysosome the organelle that contains digestive enzymes; also known as a "suicide sack".
Mitochondria turns food and oxygen into adenosine triphosphate or ATP, which produces energy - the "Powerhouse" of the cell.
Nucleus central and most important part of a cell; directs all the cells activities.
Nucleolus area inside the nucleus that surrounds the chromosomes.
Ribosome manufactures proteins for the cell.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum a network of folded, tubular membranes where ribosomes are found.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum a network of folded, tubular membranes involved in protein synthesis.
Vesicle a fluid filled tube, sack or pouch inside the cell; allows things to pass through to another area of the cell
