Unit 4 Earth's forces

TermDefinition
weathering The breakdown of materials of Earth's crust into smaller pieces. The breaking of rock into sediment.
erosion The movement of sediment by wind, water, ice or gravity.
deposition The process by which sediment is laid down, or placed, in a new location.
watershed An area of land where all of the ground and surface water from the area drains into the same place.
Catastrophic event A violent, usually destructive, natural or man-made occurrence where change occurs.
mechanical weathering The breaking down of rocks by physical processes.
Chemical weathering The breaking down of rocks by chemical agents.
Climate The average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time.
atmosphere The layer of gases that surround a planet.
hydrosphere The water located on top of the Earth's surface and underground.
lithosphere The land(rocks). The solid portion of a planet.
biosphere The organisms that live on a planet.
