Chemical Change 5th
Words To know for the exam of Chemical & Physical Changes
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Phase Changes | Phase Changes- When matter changes from one form to another ( solid, liquid, gas) |
Freezing- | Freezing- When matter changes from liquid to solid after heat is lost at 0 degrees Celsius |
Melting- | Melting- When matter changes from a solid to a liquid when heat is gained |
Evaporation- | Evaporation- When matter changes from liquid to a gas after gaining heat at 100 degrees Celsius |
Condensation- | Condensation- When matter changes form a gas to a liquid after losing heat. |
Steam | Steam- is the gas given off when a liquid changes to a gas ( like water in you iron ) |
Five Chemical Properties | Five Chemical Properties – are properties observed when one substances is changed into another |
Flammability | Flammability- ability of a substance to burn |
Toxicity | Toxicity- the degree to which something is poisonous |
pH- | pH- the acidity of a liquid substance |
Reactivity | Reactivity - the response of one substance to another |
Rusting | Rusting- iron reacting with oxygen |
Burning- | Burning- when something catches on fire |
Reversible | Reversible- the ability to return to how you |
Compounds- | Compounds- When atoms of two or more elements combine chemically, and form a compound with different properties than the individual elements from which it is made. |
Molecules | Molecules- the smallest unit of a compound is a molecule. |
Chemical Reactions | Chemical Reactions- when the atoms of two or more elements combine or split up to form a substance with different properties |
Law of Conservation of Matter- | states that matter cannot be created or destroyed. That means that the mass of any materials that have gone through a chemical change together will be the same after the experiment as it was before the experiment. |
Six Signs of Chemical Reaction | a. Heat b. Light c. Smoke/fumes d. Fizz/Bubbles e. New Solids f. Smells Different |
Atoms- | Atoms- the smallest unit of an element is an atom |
