Organs Group of tissues that work together to perform a specific function
Structure Parts of an organism that perform specific tasks
Function A purpose or task
Composition Something that contains other things
Systems A group of parts that work together to do a general function
Characteristics of living things Cells, energy, reproduction, grow & develop, respond to stimuli, adapt
Metabolism All life processes that take place in the cell; includes energy-using processes and energy-creating processes
Nutrience A substance that nourishes an organism
Stimulus Any change in an organism's environment
Response An organism's response to stimuli
Reproduction An organism's way of making more of itself
Spontaneous generation A false belief that says that living things came from non-living matter
Adaptation Characteristics or developments that increase the chances of an organism surviving in a specific environment
Variation Characteristics that differentiate one organism from another
Circulatory system function -Transports oxygen, food, and other substances -Transports wastes to organs for elimination -Defends the body against diseases -Connects all other organ systems
Digestive system function Breaks down food pieces into much smaller pieces so then they can be absorbed and transported throughout the body
Nervous system function -Coordinate and control actions of all organs and organ systems -Detect, process, and respond to changes in the external and internal environments
Excretory system function Removes chemical and gaseous wastes from the blood
Skeletal system function -Provide a movable support frame for the body -Protect soft-tissue organs such as the heart was lungs
Integumentary system function -Protects the body's internal environment from the external environment -Senses pain, pressure, and temperature
Charles Darwin A brilliant evolutionist that proved the theory of evolution
Example of made of cells An organism
Example of non-living organism A virus
Respiratory system function -Transport oxygen from the outside air to the blood -Transport carbon dioxide from the blood to the outside air
Muscular system function -Move bones -Move organs that contain muscle tissue
Circulatory system structure A series of tubes with a pump
Skeletal system structure Hard, articulated, and provides a point of attachment for the muscles
Muscular system structure Contains muscle cells that can contract and expand to move the body
Respiratory system structure Lungs are made up of a very large surface area to facilitate gas exchange
Excretory system structure Mainly the kidneys, which are a giant filter that filter the blood
Digestive system structure A extremely long tube which transports food
Integumentary system structure Made up of tissues and adapted to make you warm (Hairs on skin) and cooling you off (with sweat glands)
Nervous system structure Made up of very long cells that are able to conduct electrical impulses from one part of the body to another
