What is erosion? the moving of rock and soil that has been weathered
What are the 3 main forces of erosion on Earth? wind, water and glaciers
What is weathering? the breaking down of rock into smaller pieces
What causes weathering? mechanical and chemical forces cause weathering
Weathering is important because...... Weathering is important because it results in the formation of new soil
How are metamorphic rocks formed? Igneous and sedimentary rocks that have been changed due to high temperature and pressure
How are sedimentary rocks formed? Layers of rock fragments, soil and minerals get pressed together. (usually underwater)
How are igneous rocks formed? Magma under the Earth's crust cools and solidifies
What causes volcanoes to form? Molten (melted) material from inside the Earth escapes out an opening in the Earth’s crust. new layers cool and harden on top of old layers, forming a conical shape.
What causes earthquakes? Stress builds up in the Earth’s crust due to the tectonic plates pushing on one another.
Why are oceans salty? Runoff from minerals on land and decaying sea life
What percentage of the Earth is covered by water? approximately 70-75%
Name the layers of the Earth from the outside in toward the center. Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core
