Weather and Climate

TermDefinition
High Pressure A mass of sinking cool air that usually bring fair weather. High pressure systems- mostly sunny days with little or no precipitation are ahead; air sinks, inhibiting cloud formation and precipitation.
Low Pressure A mass of rising warm air that usually bring wet, stormy, bad weather, air rising, cloudy/overcast. Air rises near low pressure systems and cools, condenses into clouds, and forms precipitation
Local Winds Wind that forms in a small area due to temperature changes. Winds that blow over short distances
Global Winds Winds that blow steadily from specific directions over long distances., Giant convection currents that circulate within the Northern and Southern Hemispheres of the Earth
Sea Breeze movement of air from sea to land during the day when cooler air from above the water moves over the land, forcing the heated, less dense air above the land to rise
Land Breeze movement of air from land to sea at night, created when cooler, denser air from the land forces up warmer air over the sea
Coriolis Effect The way Earth's rotation makes winds in the Northern Hemisphere curve to the right and winds in the Southern Hemisphere curve to the left as looking form the poles.
convection the transfer of heat through a fluid (liquid or gas) caused by molecular motion (HOT fluid move fast and up; less dense,... COLD fluids move slow and down; more dense)
Salinity measure of salt in water, higher salinity the lower the freezing point and the more dense the water
El Nino a climate event in the Pacific Ocean during which winds shift and push warm water toward the coast of South America
Weather The condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place, short period of time in a specific geographical location
Climate Overall and average weather in an area over a long period of time
Air Mass A huge body of air that has similar temperature, humidity, and air pressure at any given height, a body of air that has about the same temperature and moisture throughout
Cold Front Forms when cold air moves under warm air which is less dense and pushes warm air up. Produces violent thunderstorms, heavy rain, & snow that are followed by fair, cooler weather.
Warm Front a front where warm air moves over cold air and brings rain showers followed by warmer, humid and clear weather
Stationary Front a boundary between air masses that don't move possibly causing rain for several days brings many days of continuous precipitation
Occluded Front a front where a warm air mass is caught between two colder air masses and brings cool temperatures and large amounts of rain and snow usually produce light rain or other precipitation
High Pressure mostly sunny days with little or no precipitation are ahead; air sinks, inhibiting cloud formation and precipitation
Low Pressure cloudy weather and precipitation are on the way; air rises and cools, condenses into clouds, and forms precipitation.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
