| igneous rock | form when lava or magma cools and minerals crystallize |
| partial melting | the process whereby some minerals melt at relatively low temperatures while other minerals remain |
| Bowen's reaction series | illustrates the relationship between cooling magma and the formation of minerals that make up igneous rock |
| fractional crystallization | is similar to partial melting in that the composition of magma can change |
| intrusive rock | has coarse grains (larger than 1 cm) |
| extrusive rock | has fine grains they need magnification to see |
| basaltic rock | dark-colored, low silica contents, and contain mostly plagioclase and pyroxene |
| granitic rock | light-colored, high silica, contain mostly quartz and feldspar |
| texture | refers to the size, shape, and distribution of the crystals or grains that make up a rock |
| porphyritic texture | has different sizes of grains |
| vesicular texture | has a spongy appearance |
