Axial Skeleton

TermDefinition
Anvil Located in the inner ear, also known as the incus
Articular Cartilage Located at the ends of all bones
Atlas Part of the cervical vertebrae. First vertebrae, it holds up the head.
Axis Part of the cervical vertebrae. The second vertebrae, it's the one with the nub.
Body of the Sternum Main part of the sternum
Cervical Vertebrae Located in the neck. Cervical vertebrae have 3 openings, the larges being for the spinal chord, and the other two ((transverse openings)) for nerves and blood vessels
Costal Cartilage Cartilage that connect the ribs to the sternum.
Coccyx Located in the "tailbone" Has 1-3 fused vertebrae. Connects to the sacrum.
Coronal Suture Separates the frontal and parietal bone ((Found in the skull))
Foramen An opening in a bone where a blood vessel or nerve travels
Process Part of the bone that "sticks out" and where a muscle attatches
Condyle A smooth surface that articulates with another bone
External Acoustic Meatus Ear canal
False Ribs 5 sets of the ribs that are not directly attached to the sternum
Floating Ribs 2 pairs of ribs that are not attached to the sternum
Foramen Magnum Where the spinal chord enters the brain
Frontal Bone Forehead
Hammer Also known as the malleus. Located in the inner ear.
Infraorbital Foramen Holes below each eye
Lumbar Vertebrae 5 of the largest vertebrae, associated with looking like "moose" Found in the lower back
Mandible The lower jaw, and the only bone in the skull that moves
Manubrium Upper part of the sternum
Mastoid Process Directly behind the ear
Maxilla Upper jaw
Lamboidal Suture "Last" suture
Nasal Bone in the bridge of the nose
Occipital The very back of the head
Occipital Condyle Where the skull meets the axis
Parietal Bone 2 bones that meet at the top of the skull on sagittal sides
Sacrum 5 fused vertebrae that are part of the "tailbone"
Sagittal Suture Suture that connects the 2 Parietal Bones
Spinous Process "Nose" of the back of the vertebrae
Squamosal Suture Side suture
Stirrup Also known as the Stapes. Located in the inner ear.
Styloid Process Toothlike extension under the jaw
Temporal Bone Temple
Thoracic Vertebrae 12, looks like an aardvark. Located in the back
Transverse Process Sides of the vertebrae
True Ribs 7 pairs of ribs that attach directly to the sternum
Vertebral Foramen Where the spinal chord travels
Xyphoid Process The lowermost part of the sternum
Zygomatic "Cheek bone"
Zygomatic Arch An arch that extends from the cheek to the temple
