| carrying capacity | The highest number of individual plants or animals that can live in an ecosystem and share the same resources |
| commensalism | A relationship between two organisms where one is helped and the other organism is not affected |
| community | All of the different types of species that live in the same area |
| consumner | Organisms that eat other organisms |
| ecosystem | All of the living and nonliving things in an area |
| energy pyramid | How energy moves in an ecosystem |
| food web | A network of food chains that represents the balance in an ecosystem |
| habitat | An organism's home |
| herbivore | A type of consumer that eats only plants |
| host | An organism upon which a parasite feeds |
| limiting factors | The resources, such as food, shelter, space, and water, in an ecosystem that organisms need to live |
| mutualism | A relationship between two organisms where both organisms benefit |
| omnivore | A type of consumer that eats both plants and animals |
| overpopulation | When there is too many of the same kind of animal in one habitat |
| parasite | An organism that takes food from another organism causing harm to that living thing |
| parasitism | A relationship between two organisms where one benefits and the other is harmed. |
| population | A group of the same kind of organism or species |
| predator | An animal that eats another animal |
| prey | An animal that is eaten by another animal |
| producer | Organisms that can make their own food |
| resources | Basic needs such as shelter, space to grow, water, air, and food |
| scavenger | An animal that eats another animal that is already dead |
| species | A type of organism |
| symbiosis | A relationship where one organism depends on another for its survival |
| terrestrial | A habitat that is on land |
| organism | A single living thing |

| decomposers | Organisms that break down dead organisms into smaller parts that can be used by other living organisms |
