Chapter 3 Vocab Quiz

TermDefinition
Map is a simplified image that is a model of part of the earth's surface
Map Scale The ration of a distance represented on a map to the same distance in the real world.
Cartographer A mapmaker
Cardinal Direction One of the four key geographic direction: north, south, east, and west.
Equator The great circle of latitude perpendicular to the earth's rotational axis that divides the earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The Equator is 0 degrees latitude.
Parallel A line of latitude
Meridian A line of longitude
Geographic Coordinates The latitude and longitude used to locate a point on the globe
Map Projection The transfer of geographic information on a 3D globe onto the 2D surface of a map.
Contour Line Any line on a map that represents points of equal elevation of the ground surface above or below sea level.
Thematic Map A map that displays certain kinds of related information to produce a unified theme.
Geographic Information System (GIS) A system that uses digital map data, programs, hardware, and data storage systems to create and display information on maps.
