Chapter 2 Vocabulary - Earth Chemistry

| nucleus | the tiny dense core of an atom; made of protons and neutrons |
| physical properties | a characteristic of matter that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the matter |
| chemical property | characteristic of matter that can be observed only as it changes to a new type of of matter |
| atomic number | the number of protons in an aton |
| atomic mass | the number of protons plus the number of neutrons in an atom |
| compound | matter that is made of two or more elements and has properties different from each of these elements |
| molecule | two or more atoms that are held together |
| mixture | two or more substances that are not chemically combined |
| solution | a mixture that is evenly mixed throughout |
| solid | has a definite shape and takes up a definite volume; particles are in fixed positions |
| liquid | takes up a definite volume but changes shape to fit its container; particles are not in a fixed position |
| gas | spreads out and fills its container; particles move freely and independently |
| metal | shiny, coducts electricity, ductile, malleable |
| nonmetal | does not have the properties of a metal |
