Weathering

Vocab Focus On Earth Science Chpt 3

QuestionAnswer
erosion the process by which natural forces move weathered rock and soil from one place to another.
deposition when eroded rock and soil stop moving and lay down on the surface of the land or the bottom of lakes, rivers, and oceans
gravity the primary force of erosion that moves rock and soil downhill
deposit the root word of deposition
runoff the moving water from rain and melted snow that moves over the earth's surface and is a primary force of erosion
sediment the material moved by erosion, usualty weathered rock and soil
rills tiny channels or grooves in the soil caused by rain runoff moving downhill because of gravity and flooding.
longshore drift this two word phrase occurs when waves come into shore at an angle, helping to push sediment down the coast.
delta the place where a river flows into an ocean or lake and deposits lots of sediment as the river slows down
river the largest channel of runnoff water, when several streams flow together
gully a large groove in the soil caused by many rills carrying rain water after a strong rain
meandering this word describes the curvy path of a river in a flat flood plain
flood plain the flat area around a river that gets flooded after huge rains bring runoff downstrearn
stream a large channel of rainwater running downhill that is formed from many gullies flowing together
small -> big: rills, gullies, streams, rivers the order, from smallest to biggest, of runoff channels
channels A depressed area in the soil where runoff rain water can travel. These can be small (rills) or huge (rivers).
beach An area of wave-washed sediment along a coast.
creep A type of mass movement where the surface slowly slides down a steep hill.
waves The key agent of erosion along beaches.
V-shaped valley Over a long period of time, fast-flowing downhill rivers can form a _-______ _______
