| Lava | Magma that flows out onto earths surface. |
| Igneous Rock | Form when lava or magma cools and minerals crystallize. |
| Partial Melting | The process whereby some minerals melt at relatively low temperatures while other minerals remain solid. |
| Bowens Reaction Series | That as magma cools and crystallizes, minerals form in predictable patterns in a process |
| Fractional Crystallization | Is similar to partial melting in that the composition of magma can change it. |
| Intrusive rock | When magma cools and crystallizes below earths surface. |
| Extrusive Rock | Magma that cools and crystallizes on earths surface. |
| Basaltic Rock | Are dark-colored, have lower silica contents, and contain mostly plagioclase and pyroxene. |
| Granitic Rock | Are light-colored, have high silica contents, and contain mostly quartz, potassium feldspar, and plagioclase feldspar. |
| Texture | Refers to the size, shape, and distribution of the crystals or grains that make up a rock. |
| Porphyritic Texture | Characterized by large, well-formed crystals surrounded by finer-grained crystals of the same mineral or different minerals. |
| Vesicular Texture | This is a spongy appearance. |
| Pegmatite | Veins of extremely large-grained minerals. |
| Kimberlite | A diamond that is valuable and rare. |
