Genetics vocab

TermDefinition
Heredity The passing on of physical or mental traits genetically from one generation to another
Trait A genetically determined characteristic
Genetics The genetic features of an organism or a characteristic
Fertilization The action or process of fertilizing an egg, a female animal, or plant
Purebred An animal bred from parents of the same breed
Gene A unit of heredity that is transferred from a parent to an offspring and is held to determine some of the characteristics
Alleles One of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation
Dominant Alleles An allele that produces the same phenotype even though its paired allele is identical or different
Recessive Alleles Results in expression of the recessive characteristic if there is no dominant allele present
Hybrid The offspring of two plants or animals of different species
Probability A probable or the most probable event
Punnett Square The Punnett square is a diagram that is used to predict an outcome of a cross or breeding experiment
Phenotype The set of characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment
Genotype The genetic constitution of an individual organism
Homozygous Having the two genes at corresponding loci on homologous chromosomes
Heterzygous Having the two genes at corresponding loci on homologous chromosomes different for one or more loci
Codominance The relationship between two versions of a gene
Meiosis A type of cell division that results in four daughter cells, each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell
Messenger RNA Form of RNA in which genetic information transcribed from DNA as a bases is transferred to a ribosome
Transfer RNA RNA consisting of folded molecules that transport amino acids from the cytoplasm of a cell to a ribosome
Mutation Inability to speak (result of congenital deafness or brain damage)
