cell structures and function

| cell wall | -animals don't have one -plants:made of cellulose -gives strength to plant thru turgor pressure |
| cell membrane | -Cell Membrane is the outside covering of a cell that is flexible but still provides support. It determines what goes in and out of the cell such as water, ions, oxygen, CO2 and nutrients. |
| Vacuole | - storage unit in cells that hold water. small in animal cells |
| nucleus | control center of the cell, houses DNA, controls cell growth and makes ribosomes |
| lysosome | contains digestive enzymes to break things down in the cell |
| Mitochondria | - "powerhouse" of the cell. Produces energy by breaking down glucose |
| Cytoplasm | - gelatinous "goo", semi-transparent fluid that fills the cells. Organelles are suspended in it |
| Rough ER | - covered in ribosomes, stores proteins |
| Smooth ER | - transports cell products |
| Ribosome | - Site of protein synthesis (makes protein) |
| Golgi Body | - Packages cell products for transport (like ups) |
| site of photosynthesis turns light in to energy has chlorophyll |
