TermDefinition
tributary The streams and small rivers that feed into a main river.
watershed The land area that supplies water to a river system.
divide One watershed is separated from another by a ridge of land
reservoir A lake that stores water for human resource
nutrients are substances such as nitrogen and phosphorus that enable plants and algae to grow
eutrophication The nutrients that build up in a lake over many years
wetland is a land area that is covered with a shallow layer of water during some or all of the year
permeable Materials that have large and connected pores allowing water to pass through
impermeable Materials that water cannot pass through easily
saturated zone The area of permeable rock or soil that is totally filled, or saturated with water
water table the top of a saturated zone
unsaturated zone the layer of rocks and soil above the water table
aquifer Any underground layer of permeable rock or sediment that holds water
artesian well a well where water rises because of pressure within an aquifer.
