pure substances

pure substances a sample of matter, either a single compound, that has definite chemical and physical properties
compound a substance made up of 2 or more different elements joined by chemical bonds
molecule the smallest unit of a substance that keeps all of the physical and chemical properties of the substances.
chemical formula a combination of chemical symbols and numbers to represent a substance
subscript a small number written to the right and slightly below a chemical symbol to tell the number of atoms of that element in the substance.
mixture a combination of 2 or more substances that are not chemically combined
