Distinguish between atoms and molecules.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Atom | the smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element. |
| Element | a substances that cannot be seperated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means |
| Nucleus | in physical science, an atom's central region, which is made up of protons and neutrons. |
| Proton | a subatomic particle that has a positive charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom |
| Neutron | an elementary particle having no charge, mass slightly greater than that of a proton. |
| Electron | an elementary particle that is a fundamental constituent of matter, having a negative charge. |
| Atomic Number | the number of positive charges or protons in the nucleus of an atom of a given element, and therefore also the number of electrons normally surrounding the nucleus. |
| Neutral | having no overall charge |
| Atomic Mass | the mass of an isotope of an element measured in units formerly based on the mass of one hydrogen atom taken as a unit |
| Chemical Symbol | a one- or two-letter code that represents an element |
