TermDefinition
Need of all living organisms. 1. Food for energy 2. Water to dissolve chemicals 3. Living Space 4. Homestatois (Stable Internal Conditions) for cells to work properly.
Characteristics of all living organisms. 1. Made of cells 2. Use Energy 3. Respond to their environment 4. Can Reproduce 5. Grow and develop more complex 6. Contain the Chemicals of Life
*Cells "Building Blocks of Life" All living things are made of one or more cells.
*Use Energy Animals get energy when they break down the food they eat. Plants make food using Photosynthesis; then take this food and use it for energy.
Metabolism Ingestion- take in food. Digestion- break down into simple molecules. Respiration- Combine food with oxygen to make energy. Excretion- Get rid of waste.
*Response a reaction caused by a stimulus. Ex: A flower will follow the sun as it goes across the sky. When it is hot out animals will perspire , which will let their body cool down.
Stimulus a change in the environment that causes a response. Ex: When there is a loud noise we jump.
*Reproduction Living things make more of themselves. One celled organisms will divide into two Identical cells, called asexual reproduction. Multi celled organisms will reproduce sexually where genes from both parents will combine to make a unique offspring.
*Growth When an organism is 'born', gets more complex, and dies. Lifespan.
*Chemicals of Life Carbohydrates- used for energy, Lipids-used for energy, Proteins-used to repair, Nucleic Acid- DNA- blueprints of life-carry the traits of parents.
Heterotroph Eats to get food. Animals are all Heterotrophs.
Autotroph Makes own food. Usually they do this with chlorophyll . (Photosynthesis) Plants are all Autotrophs.
Asexual Reproduction Mitosis, Binary Fission- when a cell divides into two identical cells.
Sexual Reproduction Two organisms combine their genes to make a unique offspring.
Homeostasis 'Home is stable'- maintain normal stable internal conditions. shiver, sweat, thirsty, blink, sneeze

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
