Ch 1 metric system

TermDefinition
Unit A known amount used for measuring. (inches, miles, yards, feet, minutes, day)
Metric System System of measurements used by scientists
Meter The basic unit of length in the metric system
Meterstick a common tool for measuring length in the metric system (about 39 inches).
Area Amount of surface an object has on any one side. (area = length x width) 1cm x 1cm=1cm2
Volume the amount of space an object takes up.
Liter The Basic unit of volume in the metric system
Meniscus the curved surface of a liquid.
Graduated Cylinder A glass or plastic cylinder used to measure the volume of liquid.
Displacement of water method method of measuring volume of irregularly shaped objects.
Balance an instrument used to measure mass.
Gram The basic unit of mass in the metric system.
Mass The amount of material an object has.
Standard Mass A small object that is used with a balance to determine mass.
Weight The measure of gravitational pull on an object's material.
Centimeter A unit of length in the metric system equal to 1/100 of a meter. It takes 100 of these to make 1 meter.
Millimeter A unit of length in the metric system equal to 1/1000 of a meter. It takes 1000 of these to make 1 meter.
Physical Science the study of matter and energy
Energy it is needed to make things move.
Chemistry The study of matter and how it changes
Physics The study of how energy acts with matter
