| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Heredity | The passing of traits to parents to off springs. |
| Hybrid | An organism that has two different alleles for a trait. |
| Purebred | The off spring of many generations that have the same traits. |
| Trait | A characteristic that an organism can pass on to its off springs through its genes. |
| Offspring | A persons child or children. |
| Gene | The set of information that controls a trait. |
| Alleles | The different forms of gene. |
| Dominant Allele | An allele whose trait always shows up in the organism when the allele is present. |
| Recessive Allele | An allele that is masked when a dominant allele is present. |
| Homozygous Alleles | Two identical alleles. |
| Heterozygous alleles | Two different alleles. |
| Genotype | An organism's genetic makeup,or allele combinations. |
| Phenotype | An organism's physical appearance or, visible traits. |
| Sex-linked genes | A gene that is carried on the X or Y chromosome. |
| Carrier | A person who has a recessive allele for a trait, but does not have the trait. |
| Sex Chromeosomes | A pair of chromosomes carrying genes that determine whether a person is male or female. |
| Genetic disorder | An abnormal condition that a person inherits through the genes or chromosomes. |
| Pedigree | A chart that tracks members in a family with a specific trait. |
| Selective Breeding | The process of selecting a few organisms with desired traits to serve as parents of the next generation. |
| Inbreeding | A selective breeding method in which two genetically identical alleles are crossed. |
| Hybidization | A selective breeding method in which two genetically different individuals are crossed. |
| Clone | A organism that is genetically identical to the organism from which it was produced. |
| Genetic Engineering | The transfer of a gene from the DNA of one organism into another with a genetic disorder. |
| Gene Therapy | The insertion of working copies of a gene into the cells of a person with a genetic disorder in an attempt to correct the disorder. |
| Meiosis | The process that occurs in the formation of sex cells by which the chromosomes are reduced by half. |
| Haploid | A single set of unpaired chromosomes. |
| Diploid | Comparing two sets of chromosomes one from each parent. |
| Mutation | A change in a gene or chromosomes. |
