QuestionAnswer
What are characteristics of a solid? definite shape and definite volume
Describe a solid's molecules. packed closely together and vibrates in place
What are two types of solids? Describe them. Crystalline solid, which has particles are arranged in a regular pattern throughout, and melts at a specific temperature (ex. salt, sugar, snow). Amorphous solid, which are not arranged in a particular pattern and does not melt at a distinct temperature
What are characteristics of a liquid? definite volume, but no definite shape
Describe a liquid's molecules. free to move, which gives it no shape, but they are packed close together
What is surface tension? the result of an inward pull among the molecules of a liquid that brings the molecules closer together.
What is viscosity? a liquid's resistance to flow
What are the characteristics of gases? no definite shape or volume
Describe the molecules of gases? spread apart and constantly moving
What is matter? anything that has mass and takes up space
What is a pure substance? a pure substance is any type of single material
What is an element? Describe them. a pure substance that cannot be broken down. it is on the periodic table
What is a compound? Describe. pure substance made up of two or more elements chemically bonded. they can only be separated chemically, they have a chemical formula, and they have a set ratio
What is a mixture? Describe. made up of two or more substances (elements, compounds, or both) but are not chemically combined. they have to be separated physically, they are not found on the periodic table, and they have no chemical formula, and they have no fixed ratio
heterogeneous mixture can see the different parts, not uniform throughout
homogeneous mixture mixed evenly, uniform throughout; a solution is homogeneous, but it does not have to be a liquid
colloid mixture containing small, undissolved particles that do not settle out
suspension mixture in which particles can be seen and easily separated by settling or filtration. not uniform throughout
