Rock Cycle

TermDefinition
Igneous Rock Igneous rock is one of the three main groups of the rock cycle that can either form above or below the Earth's surface.
Metamorphic Rock Metamorphic is one of the three main groups of the rock cycle that is formed by heat and pressure.
Sedimentary Rock Sedimentary rock is one of the three main groups of the rock cycle that is formed by sediments being compacted and cemented together.
Magma Magma is molten material below the surface of the Earth, mostly used to form Intrusive Igneous rocks.
Lava Lava is magma (molten material) above the surface of the Earth, used to form Extrusive Igneous rocks.
Extrusive rocks Extrusive rocks are Igneous rocks formed above the surface of the Earth from lava, cools quickly and has small crystals; fine-grained texture
Intrusive rocks Intrusive rocks are Igneous rocks formed below the surface of the Earth from magma, cools slowly and has large crystals; coarse-grained texture.
Here's some examples of an Extrusive Igneous rock: 1.) Obsidian 3.) Scoria 5.) Rhyolite 2.) Basalt 4.) Pumice
Here's some examples of an Intrusive Igneous rock: 1.) Granite 3.) Pegmatite 2.) Diorite 4.) Gabbro
Fun Fact Do you know that Stone Mountain is actually and Intrusive Igneous rock? It was made below ground (from Granite) and all the sediments around it eroded away, leaving the mountain we know now use for exercise.
