What is a volcano? a weak spot in the crust where molten material comes to the surface
What is the difference between magma and lava? MAGMA is molten material that is INSIDE the volcano and LAVA is molten material that is OUTSIDE of the volcano (it has erupted)
What is the Ring of Fire? a volcanic area that borders the Pacific Ocean
Where are Earth's volcanic regions found? at diverging (pull apart) & converging (push together) plate boundaries
What process happens at divergent plate boundaries? sea-floor spreading
What process happens at convergent plate boundaries? subduction
What is a hot spot? a volcanic area
Where are hot spots located? in the middle of continental or oceanic plates AWAY from plate boundaries
When molten material cools, what does it form? igneous rock (such as basalt and granite)
Can volcanic activity be considered constructive? Why or why not? Yes, because it a creates new rock and forms islands.
What is the magma chamber? where magma collects
What is the pipe? where magma rises to get to the surface
What is the vent? the opening at the top of the pipe where magma escapes
What is lava flow? lava that flows down the sides of the volcano and over land
What is a crater? a bowl-shaped area where lava collects
